Doll FAQs

How do I clean my doll?

Because of the delicate nature of hand-sewing and some of the materials used, you should never put your doll in the washer. Spot-clean only when necessary by hand-washing with a small amount of warm water and mild detergent. Allow to air dry. If the doll is simply dusty, using a lint roller works great!

Do the dolls contain any adhesives or glues?

Some of them, yes. This is used to adhere velcro, some occasional details on the clothes, and in the creation of the accessories. Please refer to the listing for individual materials used in the creation of each doll if you'd like to avoid purchasing one with glue. I use a variety of glues depending on the circumstances, but I primarily use fabric glue, Tacky Glue, or hot glue. All the glues I use are non-toxic when dry.

Can these dolls be purchased for a baby or toddler?

Technically no. The United States has very strict policies on safety testing for toys. Here's some specific information on testing that's infeasible for what a handmade doll maker would be able to do. They test fabrics, joints, eyes, etc. The government also requires that all fabric made for a children's toy is completely new, and I make a lot of my dolls with upcycled, recycled, or scrap fabrics that don't quality. Without third party testing and ceritfication, technically no handmade toys are ever suitable for children, so legally I can't say that they're intended for kids. That being said, there are some dolls I make that really aren't intended for kids, and I label those listings as such, and there are some dolls that I would consider safe but technically the government does not. I do label things as specifically as possible. That being said, there are many kiddos who have a doll made by me. As with anything, please use common sense. Don't leave any toys unattended with children or animals, etc. Please feel free to reach out and ask any questions in this area.

This doll doesn't look like a choking hazard - why is it listed as such?

If the doll has acrylic eyes (hard, plastic, shiny), those are called "safety eyes." Ironically, safety eyes aren't as safe as felt eyes that are sewn on. Safety eyes snap into place and are extremely difficult to remove, but apparently look tastier than felt eyes, and so they're more likely to be chewed on. If a hole is chewed out of the fabric, the safety eyes can then fall out of the doll. Safety eyes can also technically come loose and pop off. This is highly unlikely - they're super hard to snap together and nearly impossible for me to snap apart - but it does happen, so they're not considered safe if you live with someone who chews things or eats shiny plastic things. Here's a great article on safety eye safety.

How do I purchase a custom doll?

I open up commissions frequently. There isn't a wait list; I'll just announce it casually in my Instagram, or you'll see a listing pop up on the website. If you're unsure, please don't hesitate to message or email me and ask! The listings are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. I typically have a handful of listings available for pop culture and tribute dolls, as well as mini paintings. Please refer to the listing for all the information I'll need from you to get started! Once I have the info, you'll be put in a short queue of whoever else ordered customs. I'll give you an estimated completion date, but all customs are shipped out within 2-4 weeks of starting.

Given all of your eco-policies, why is my doll packaged in plastic?

Great question! I package the dolls in a plastic sleeve to protect them if the box is left out in the rain or snow. If I didn't put it in plastic, the doll would be ruined if your mail carrier leaves it out in the elements. I am working through my cache of plastic sleeves, but I found a new supplier for biodegradable "plastic" protective sleeves for when I run through my current supply!
